Rainforest RemediesTM is a small privately-owned company with headquarters in Belize in the Cayo District. The company was formed in 1992 as a result of observing the destruction of old growth stands of forests being cleared for development in Belize. It seemed an obvious step to try to salvage as many doomed plants and trees as possible. But what to do with truckloads of vines, tree barks, roots and herbs once they were removed from their habitat often just minutes ahead of bulldozers and chain saws. Preserving the plant material in alcohol was the next step and from there to bottling, product development, labeling and finally marketing to both lay people and health care professionals. The philosophy of Rainforest Remedies is that the forest is worth more standing than destroyed. We thought a good, viable herbal tincture company would be a logical way to prove that premise. About 10% of the plants that make up the formulas are wild crafted from a private reserve surrounding Ix Chel Farm.
Furthermore, our formulas are purposefully simple, some containing only one medicinal plant, others no more than six ingredients. The reason for this is to avoid extra stress on the liver which has to produce a different enzyme for every active principle in each plant. Since it is possible for a single plant to contain dozens of chemical compounds, a herbal formula with too many plants taxes liver function and thus further deranges health.
All of the various formulas were developed to be taken in any combination without causing harmful reactions.
Breastfeeding women should carefully observe any negative reactions in their infants such as a sudden skin condition, diarrhea or change in urine color and odor.

Some of the plants in the formulas are not well known in the United States and Europe. That is because Belize is a unique tropical habitat and certain plants will grow only in this country, thus they are seldom considered for further research by pharmaceutical companies or related organizations even though they have a long history of use in traditional medicine. In some cases, they have simply slipped through the cracks over the centuries. For instance, Billy Web bark, Sweetia panamensis, is a well known, highly respected remedy for Type II diabetes throughout the Caribbean where it grows, y et there is almost no scientific data or information on the bark. Man Vine, Agonandra racemosa, occurs in several formulas as a nervine, stomachic and anti-spasmodic agent. It too, is almost unknown in scientific literature. Others, like our beloved Jackass Bitters, Neurolaena lobata, have considerable research data available conducted throughout the Caribbean. Its leaves are highly esteemed as a remedy for parasites, fungus, amoebas, ringworm, Candida and are a good anti-bacterial agent in general.
The therapeutic herbal formulas are sold in dry form so that you can prepare your own one quart tincture from each packet. Instructions to prepare a tincture are included with the packet. Some will always prefer to make teas. The general formula for teas is to simmer a small handful of plant material in 3 ½ cups of boiling water for 10 minutes. Let it stand for 20 minutes, strain and take one cup three times daily before meals at room temperature. The strained plant material can be used to make one more batch of tea, so store it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until you are ready to make another pot of tea.
We would like to salute our two faithful, hard working employees. Ruth Pech Guerra, mother of three, has worked for us since 1990. She lives in the Maya village of Cristo Rey on the Macal River. Pablo Cocom has worked for Rainforest Remedies since 1985, starting at the age of fourteen. He is recently married and lives in the Maya community of Succotz Village close to the Western border with Guatemala. To them both we are deeply grateful for helping us to continually produce clean, safe and reliable herbal formulas.
NOTE: Once tinctured, do not store over refrigerator, microwave or in direct sunlight.
